CHRISTIAN RETREATour past |
|
|
Our past is rich, exciting and inspiring. It would be difficult to record everything on these pages, but here are a few of the events that have shaped us. Our congregation was founded by Fr. Anthony Receveur in France in 1789 (see his life in pictures). After his death, the congregation continued to grow and many small communities were formed around France. The first community in England was established in 1848. They settled in Peckham and opened a school for poor children. Providing education was the main work of the congregation from the early 19th century until 1988. At that time spiritual retreats, so fundamental to the spirit of Fr Anthony, were revived. Today, communities are to be found in France, England, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium, Switzerland and West Africa, helping people draw closer to God. |
